About the Artist

IDOWU SHOLANKE

Idowu Sholanke (b. 1980) is a self-taught painter based in Wiltshire, England. Sholanke holds a degree in art history and archaeology, a background that shaped an early and enduring interest in visual structure, but has had no formal training in painting itself. The practice has developed entirely outside the studio-school system, through sustained independent investigation rather than inherited technique or lineage.

Sholanke's work is built around an evolving body of paintings in which the human head functions not as a portrait subject but as a structural armature. Rather than depicting likeness or psychology, the head is used as a scaffold — a device for organising bilateral symmetry, vertical axis, and the distribution of force across the picture plane. The resulting paintings return again and again to questions of containment, pressure, and compression, worked out through structure, mark density, and friction rather than through a fixed or symbolic palette. Colour is applied freely from piece to piece; it is not the mechanism through which meaning is built.

This approach has developed without direct reference to specific art-historical movements or named influences, arrived at instead through Sholanke's own testing, failure, and revision — including a willingness to paint back over works that don't hold up, without sentiment for the result.

Sholanke approaches painting as a contribution to ongoing conversations in contemporary painting practice, rather than as a vehicle for autobiography or personal expression. This body of work was first shown publicly in HOLD, a solo exhibition in Wiltshire. Sholanke exhibits under their own name and lives and works in Wiltshire.
